As the price of fertilizer in the open market continues to rise due to the delay in the payment of agro input contractors and the ban of urea, the government of Gombe has come to the aid of farmers in the state.
The Gombe state Government has approved the sum of N2.7 billion for the procurement of 20, 000 metric tons of fertilizer for this year’s farming season.
The Commissioner of Agriculture, Alhaji Dahiru Buba Biri, disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the end of the state executive council meeting. The commissioner said Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo who chaired the council meeting has approved procurement of 10, 000 metric tons of Urea and 10, 00 metric tons of NPK at the total cost of N2.7 billion.
He said his ministry has already received 50 per cent of the quantity to be procured, adding that very soon the ministry will launch the distribution exercise for onward delivery to farmers in preparation of the farming season.
Alhaji Dahiru Biri also said that rumours going round that the Federal and States Governments have removed subsidy on fertilizer are false, he said the fertilizer procured by government for distribution to farmers is subsidized.
